Blowback
Have you ever heard the term "blowback"? It refers to the phenomenon where the U.S. government does something to manipulate the world stage in order to favor its own interests, and those actions end up creating unfavorable situations sometime in the future. Examples: funding bin Laden during the Afghan-Russian War; arming Saddam Hussein during the Iraq-Iran War; promoting democracy in the Palestinian territory, etc. A domestic example that is absolutely cracking me up today - George W. Bush.
Since 1998, Republicans and conservatives around the country were talking about this "great American" in Texas, son of a war hero and former President, leader extraordinaire, etc. So he is inserted (not voted) into the office of President in December 2000. He does nothing positive for the country over the next four years, but is voted into the same office in November of 2004. And now? He is the worst thing to happen to the Republican party since Tricky Dick Nixon. How's that for blowback, folks?
Republicans and conservatives will tell you that the majority of this country is conservative (this assertion is blatantly false, and I will explore why in another post) yet only 30% of Americans "approve" of the job Bush is doing. In my own personal opinion, these people that constitute that 30% are people who haven't picked up a newspaper since sometime in October 2001 when Bush launched an attack on Afghanistan. They are the same people who still have "W" stickers on their bumpers. Welcome to 2006!
But assuming the conservative assertion is true, that means a majority of those conservatives now disapprove of their poster boy. And they should. Outlandish spending, unnecessary military depletion, false promises about abortion and gay marriage legislation (this is my favorite - he clearly manipulated the Christain right for votes, a group who prides themselves on recognizing truth). And today, we learn that the Bush administration sent the FBI into a Democratic senator's office to search personal files. What happened to minimal government intervention into personal affairs? Well folks, you should have seen that go out the window with the Terry Schiavo case.
Add it all up and you have one of the biggest scams of the 20th century, and perhaps the 21st - Compliments of Karl Rove. Maybe next time, you should actually listen to "the liberals" when we critique your candidate. It might be the smartest move you ever make.
